When and Why Jurats Are Required

when-and-why-jurats-are-required

One’s words is essential in different situations, but the verbal expression of words is no longer enough to hold up in legal matters. In cases where the absolute truth is required, an oath is usually required.

A jurat notarization is performed when an individual is required to affirm that what is contained in the document is true and correct to the best of their knowledge. The Jurat also includes the individual declaring he/she is signing of their own free will and they understand what they are signing.

Jurats can be required in different notarized documents and may be referred to as “verification,” “affidavit,” or “oath.” Jurats follow the standard notarization process where a Notary Public physically witnesses the signing. The difference from an Acknowledgement notarization, is that the Notary Public administers an oath and records it in their notary journal.
